What is Spray Foam Insulation?
The Spray Foam Insulation that Eco Insulation Peterborough use is a ‘relatively’ modern invention in the general scheme of home insulation; it is a polyurethane foam, sometimes known as PU Foam insulation. In years gone by, the standard material in use was something called Batt, which is essentially sheets of fiberglass cladding. Spray Foam Insulation in Peterborough is mixed from 2 components, and drawn through hoses to the mixing chamber, and from there is sprayed directly onto the intended surface, where it immediately adheres and expands to between 20 and 30 times its liquid volume. Once cured, spray foam insulation is non-toxic, and it is not an irritant, unlike fiberglass insulation, which if touched can be incredibly itchy, or if particles are inhaled during installation, it can cause severe airway irritation.
Why Spray Foam?
Residential Spray Foam Insulation, such as that installed by Eco Insulation offers distinct advantages over traditional Batt fiberglass insulation; the most important being its R-Value. If you’ve never heard of R-Value before, just think of it as a rating of how effective a material is at resisting the passage of conductive heat, the higher the number, the better! For example, an uninsulated attic in Peterborough Ontario should, as a rule of thumb, be insulated to an R-Value of between R38 to R60; Spray foam insulation has an approximate R-Value of 6 per inch, meaning you’d need around 6.3 inches of spray foam to meet that minimum recommendation, on the converse, fiberglass Batt insulation has an R-value of approximately 2 per inch, meaning you’d need at least 19 inches of cladding to meet that suggested value – That eats up some serious attic space!
The benefits of Spray Foam insulation don’t stop there! Amongst other things, you can expect;
- An 80+ year service life, vs 10 to 25 years with Batt fiberglass (if you can keep it dry!);
- Improved soundproofing over fiberglass type insulation material, reducing ambient outdoor noise;
- Improved residential structural integrity (with closed cell foam) – yes, adding foam can increase the racking strength of your walls and roof by as much as 250 percent;
- Reduced moisture in the air in treated spaces, and therefore lower chance of mold development;
- Reduced ability of pests such as insects and rodents to get into your home;
- Potentially reduced hay fever symptoms for any sufferers in the house, as spray foam insulation provides an effective barrier against pollen ingress
- No loss of insulation performance in extremely cold conditions, unlike fiberglass, which can lose heat quickly.
Above all else, your home is supposed to be your castle, and it goes without saying it should be comfortable! If you have areas of the house that just never seem to get warm, this is just one example of where poor insulation might be the problem; spray foam insulation simply works! Your home will be consistently comfortable all throughout the year.
Can Spray Foam be Applied by Anyone?
We strongly recommend that you find a proper insulation company in Peterborough in order to install your residential spray foam insulation. It is imperative that it is done right the first time, or you will end up with a big mess! Not only that, but spray foam requires specialized equipment that isn’t typically available at Hardware stores. Worse still, without the right protective equipment, you could put yourself in danger while applying the product.
You might have previously tried to save a few bucks by laying your own Batt fiberglass insulation, but trust us, trying to save by applying your own spray foam would likely end up costing you much, much more! Also, don’t forget that the Canadian National Building Code requires that anybody spraying certain types of closed foam spray on insulation (such as the kind used by Eco Insulation) be licensed and in possession of a valid photo ID from their Quality Assurance Program. Eco Insulation ® only employs licensed and certified installers, our teams believe in doing the job the right way and treat your home with the same care they would their own. From start to finish, the job is prepared properly, the foam is applied and then the area is cleaned up, leaving you with a beautifully finished final product.
Speaking of Saving a Few Bucks
It’s widely known that Spray Foam Insulation incurs a higher upfront cost than your typical traditional fiberglass insulation, but you’re going to be saving big long term once your spray foam insulation is installed.
As we already mentioned, you can anticipate over 80 years useful service from spray foam, but what we didn’t point out, is that it the R-Value of spray foam does not reduce over time! Traditional fiberglass insulation will begin to sag over time, and once compressed, or wet, it will need to be replaced.
So, the first factor is the frequency of replacement, but there’s more! The US Department of Energy conducted a study that showed as much as 40 percent of a home’s energy is lost through gaps in the insulation where walls, windows, and doorways join. By using Spray Foam Insulation, which is capable of complete coverage, these gaps don’t exist, that means no room for air to escape. In all, it is estimated that spray foam is as much as 50 percent better as an insulator than Batt fiberglass, so expect some serious return on investment in the form of cheaper energy bills.
Spray Foam Insulation can even add value to your home if you decide to sell up and move on, in some cases allowing the owner to recoup their investment completely. Homeowners can also anticipate extended building life too! Because the roof deck is properly insulated when using spray foam, damage caused by thermal contraction and expansion is reduced, and in some cases eliminated.
Spray Foam Insulation Can Also Help to Preserve the Environment
There are, as we have mentioned, countless personal benefits to upgrading to a spray foam insulation, but did you know that there also benefits for the planet? As Spray Foam Insulation is expected to last the life of the home, there is much less fiberglass waste insulation ending up in landfill, or worse. Also, your reduced energy bills mean you’re of course using less electricity, which puts a smaller demand on the grid as a whole – the benefits that spray foam insulation companies such as Eco Insulation are bringing really do go full circle!
