We’re going to spend some time talking to you about the different types available for your attic, and the reasons why it is so important to properly insulate your loft space. Read on to find out more about the different insulation products we offer.
What’s the point in attic insulation, anyway?
Insulating an attic, to many, is just something that gets done without much second thought as to why. But we believe in ensuring that you have a solid understanding of the insulation fundamentals, with this knowledge, you’re going to have a far easier time making a decision when it comes time to either replace your attic insulation, or when making a decision on what you’d like to use in your new build home.
So, to answer the question as asked, attic insulation is there to turn your home into an energy saving machine. Especially in an area like Windsor Ontario that has hot summers and cold winters, you’ve got to ensure that the money you put into keeping your home comfortable isn’t lost. In the summer, your attic insulation goes to work to prevent the warm outside air from penetrating in to your home, and heating it up – without proper (or any) attic insulation, your air conditioning system will have to work harder to fight the rise of temperature in your home, leading to increased energy bills. Likewise, in the winter, the warm air you use to heat your home rises, and if you fail to properly insulate your home against heat transfer, you’re going to be fighting a losing battle when it comes to keeping that warm air indoors where it belongs! Keeping your home consistently warm and comfortable is easily done with the proper application of a quality insulation product.
On top of the energy saving benefits, properly applied insulation can be an enormous safety benefit too. Modern insulation products are fire retardant, and in the event of a fire, they can slow down the spread, which can gain you vital time to escape, and also afford the emergency services extra time to respond and attack the fire, thus reducing the chances of a total constructive loss. It’s awful to think about, but knowing that you’re protecting your home and family in the event of something like this occurring brings great peace of mind.
How are Insulation Products Rated?
Within this post, you’re going to be reading about the various types of insulation we offer at Eco Insulation Windsor, and in order to properly understand them, it’s important to know how they are rated. Insulation products are given something referred to as an R-Value; this is a numerical value assigned to the material that indicates its effectiveness as an insulator in direct correlation to its thickness (a thin layer of material with a high R-Value is optimum). The higher the number the better. Remember, that the insulator’s ability to trap air is dependent on its condition; if your insulation becomes compressed, its R-Value decreases – this can happen when blown fiber or cellulose settles over time, or if something is knocked into, or laid on batt sheets. One of the factors that make our Spray Foam insulation in Windsor so effective, is that it doesn’t ever compress like traditional materials.
So, what kind of attic insulation products do Eco Insulation work with?
We mentioned in the introduction to this post some of the materials we’re familiar with, and we’re going to take an opportunity to describe them to you in more detail right here. We’re going to tell you how they work, how efficient they are, and a little bit about the installation process.
Sheet, or Batt Insulation

This is probably the most commonly found attic insulation material. While it’s simple to install, we think people are often quick to underestimate the intricacies of a proper job completed with Batt sheets. A well-insulated attic leaves no gaps for air to escape through, and if you’re not careful when installing this type of insulation, especially when working around wiring, sockets, etc., it can be all too easy to misalign, and end up leaving gaps! The biggest benefit of Batt sheets is its relatively low cost, both for the product itself, and installation. It can be installed as a DIY job, but as we explained earlier, having a professional Like Eco Insulation Windsor taking care of that for you will not only be more effective, but also more convenient, faster, and safer; we say safer, because when working with and cutting these fiberglass sheets, the airborne fibers can cause respiratory irritation.
Blown Fibre and Cellulose Insulation
The reason that blown fibre and cellulose insulation are grouped together is that they are applied using a similar method, and also have a similar R-Value.

- Blown Fibre uses a similar material to batt sheets, fibre glass. It is applied using a hose and is blown into the space in chunks. It has an extraordinary reputation for coverage and can provide much superior coverage than sheet or batt insulation sheets.
- Cellulose Insulation, as mentioned previously is also blown in using a hose, in chunks. Cellulose Insulation, unlike blown fibre, is made from natural fibres, most often recycled newspaper believe it or not! It is treated with a flame retardant such as boric acid, which has the added benefit of being an excellent pest repellant.
These types of insulation typically last 10-15 years, depending on how well they are looked after, and how the ambient atmosphere is in the space it is applied to. If it gets wet or damp, it is effectively ruined and will need to be replaced.
Spray Foam Insulation
If you’re looking for the best of the best when it comes to attic insulation in Windsor Ontario, look no further than our flagship Spray Foam insulation material! Its benefits over any other material on the market are enormous, and include:

- The highest R-Value of any of our products
- The longest life span of any insulation material available
- The lowest physical volume required
Eco Insulation Windsor uses high quality, closed-cell spray foam – often considered to be the number one product on the market, it is expected to last as long as your home itself. That’s right, if applied properly, you may never need to replace your insulation again! It is a more expensive product, but you gain value for money in that you don’t have to replace it periodically like Batt sheets or blown fibre and cellulose.
Closed cell spray foam insulation is also waterproof! This makes it a lot more durable in all conditions. Not only is closed cell spray foam insulation an incredibly efficient insulator, but it can also increase the physical strength of your home if properly applied, in fact racking strength can be increased by upwards of 250 percent!
Rebates and Incentives
Installing insulation can also have some financial benefits outside of energy savings too. In fact, there are several incentives and rebates that you could qualify for through Union Gas (in partnership with the Ontario Government), such as the Home Reno rebate, which could net you up to $5000!
Qualifying for the Home Reno rebate is simple! So long as you’re renovating a home heated by propane, electricity, natural gas or wood burners, and your qualifying reno is for a single family home, townhouse, semi-detached or mobile home, and is located within the program boundaries, you could be eligible for this huge rebate.
There are similar programs available from other energy providers, such as Enbridge Gas, but don’t delay, they require that you complete your renovations before December 31st, 2019! For more information about the great rebates available in Windsor Ontario, ask your Eco Insulation contractor, and they’d be glad to share with you!
